At Crescent Dental Studio, we understand the importance of keeping your natural teeth intact. That’s why we always prioritize conservative treatments that help preserve your natural teeth. However, there may be instances where a tooth extraction is necessary in order to maintain the health and function of your mouth. If this is the case, you can rest assured that our team of experienced professionals is here to make the process as gentle and comfortable as possible. We use advanced techniques and technologies to ensure that tooth extractions are performed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. You can trust us to take care of all your general dentistry needs, including tooth extractions, with compassion and expertise.

There are a number of reasons why a dental extraction may be necessary. Some common examples include:

  • Severe tooth decay or infection: If a tooth is so decayed or infected that it cannot be repaired, it may need to be extracted to prevent the infection from spreading.

  • Crowded teeth: If you have crowded teeth, an extraction may be necessary to create space for the remaining teeth to be properly aligned.

  • Impacted teeth: If a tooth is unable to emerge from the gums (such as a wisdom tooth), it may need to be extracted.

  • Orthodontic treatment: In some cases, tooth extractions may be necessary as part of orthodontic treatment to create space for the remaining teeth to be properly aligned.

  • Gum disease: If you have advanced gum disease, an extraction may be necessary to remove infected teeth and help improve your oral health.

Tooth extractions is a relatively simple procedure that is performed in the dental office. Before the extraction, we will numb the area around the tooth to minimize any discomfort. During the procedure, our Brookhaven dentist will gently loosen the tooth and remove it from the socket. After the tooth is removed, a blood clot will form in the socket to help stop the bleeding. It is normal to experience some pain and swelling after the procedure, and we will prescribe or recommend pain medication to help you manage any discomfort. Overall, most people experience minimal discomfort during and after a tooth extraction.

Tooth Extraction Healing

Here are some general guidelines for promoting healing after a tooth extraction:

  • Reduce swelling: Swelling is normal after a tooth extraction, and can be reduced by applying a cold compress to the cheek in the area of the extraction. Do this for 10-15 minutes at a time, several times a day, for the first 24-48 hours.
  • Control pain: You will be given or prescribed medication to help control pain. Follow the instructions provided by your dentist or pharmacist.
  • Take care of the extraction site: Keep the extraction site clean by rinsing your mouth gently with warm salt water a few times a day. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this can cause the blood clot to come loose and delay healing. Avoid smoking and using straws for the first 48 hours, as these activities can also dislodge the blood clot.
  • Eat soft foods: Choose soft foods that are easy to chew, such as soup, yogurt, and mashed potatoes. Avoid hot liquids and foods, and avoid drinking from a straw for the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid strenuous activity: Avoid strenuous activity for the first 24-48 hours after the extraction, as this can increase bleeding and delay healing.
  • Reach out with questions: Contact our emergency dentist in Brookhaven if you experience any unexpected symptoms or need additional advice.
